What we survey.

Twelve kinds of survey, one way of working: attended in person, measured by hand, reported with the evidence attached.

The charter changes hands on agreed figures.

The bunkers on board change owner with the ship. One independent figure fixed at the handover is the figure neither side can argue with later.

Who asks for it
Owners and charterers
When
At delivery and at redelivery

The quantity you paid for, verified.

Bunkers are bought by the tonne and delivered by the cubic metre. An independent measurement is the only way to know you got what you paid for.

Who asks for it
Owners, operators, bunker buyers
When
Before and after every stem

Cargo quantity by displacement, shown in full.

For bulk cargo the ship herself is the scale. The bill of lading, the freight and any shortage claim rest on this one figure.

Who asks for it
Shippers, receivers, charterers
When
At loading, at discharge, or both

The ship as she was handed over, on record.

Every dent and torn gasket found at redelivery is charged to someone. The record made at delivery decides who.

Samples that will hold up later.

A quality dispute is settled by a sample, and a sample is only as good as the proof of where, when and how it was taken.

Who asks for it
Traders, receivers, shippers, insurers
When
During loading and discharge

The cargo that left the ship, barge by barge.

The ship’s figure cannot say what went into each barge. Measuring the barges is the only way a receiver knows what actually arrived.

Who asks for it
Receivers, traders, terminals
When
As each barge is loaded

Know what you are buying.

The particulars say what she is, not what she has become. An independent look before the price is agreed and the deposit paid.

Who asks for it
Buyers, banks, insurers
When
Before the memorandum of agreement

Walk the ship before the inspector does.

A detention costs days, money and a mark on the record that follows the ship. Better to find it before the inspector does.

Who asks for it
Owners and managers
When
Before a port call that may be targeted

Motor and sailing yachts, afloat and hauled out.

How she looks at the pontoon says little about what she is. A clear picture of the boat, for whoever is buying, selling or insuring her.

Who asks for it
Buyers, then owners
When
Before a sale, or at the insurer’s request

A surveyor at the hook or the hose.

What happens at the hook, the hose and in the stow can only be proved if someone wrote it down at the time.

Who asks for it
Owners, charterers, shippers, receivers
When
For the operation, or only the time and the tally

Repairs followed on your behalf.

Work is sold by the hour and the kilogram, in a yard where the owner cannot be everywhere. A second pair of eyes that answers only to you.

Who asks for it
Owners and managers
When
Dockings, repairs, conversions

Advice from people who have stood the watch.

Most disputes are decided by the first question and the first document, long before a lawyer is involved. Ask early, and ask a seaman.

Who asks for it
Owners, charterers, traders, insurers, lawyers

Before a problem has a case number
